Willow’s Earth at the Chequers Inn: a summer of coffee and community
Willow’s Earth has never believed in trading exclusively online. After all, drinking coffee (when done properly) should be conducted with real conversations and community. So, for the summer, our weekend home has been the Chequers Inn in Heaverham, Sevenoaks.
This quaint little pub, owned by the St Clere Estate, carries a long and charming history. Although the pub itself is currently closed, we’ve been serving in the garden alongside the Kentish Garden Pub, bringing eco‑crafted drinks to a space that feels full of character and possibility.
Our operating hours have been Saturdays and Sundays, typically between 9am and 1pm, weather permitting. We began our venture here in August and have traded most weekends since, with plans to continue throughout September. Each week we’ve served our signature coffee, matcha and bubble tea and the community has shown up with warmth, curiosity and support.
A horse goes to a countryside bar…
After packing down for the day, I like to spend time with my family and, of course, my horse Willow - the inspiration behind the Willow’s Earth name. Willow even makes the occasional appearance at the pub when I have time for a long hack across St Clere Estate from Fen Pond Road, where she’s stabled. It’s a five‑mile round trip and visiting the pub on horseback has become one of my favourite hacks. I stay for a drink (usually non‑alcoholic), enjoy the music drifting through the garden, and then ride back.
Trading at the Chequers Inn this summer has been more than just serving drinks. It’s been about getting to know the people and even their pets. From early‑morning dog walkers to cyclists, riders, families and locals who simply enjoy a good cup of coffee, every weekend has brought new faces and familiar ones returning for their favourites.
A summer to remember
As we head into autumn, I have to say that I’m grateful for the chance to trade here, to meet so many wonderful people, and to become part of the rhythm of this little corner of Kent. Willow’s Earth has grown because of a special community and a special place. Regardless of who eventually takes over the pub, I genuinely hope they thrive and continue welcoming the wonderful locals we’ve come to know. Here’s to more coffee, more conversations, and more moments shared together.
