Is Wood & Slumber shavings the right bedding for your horse?
I’m usually a big believer in keeping horses turned out 24/7. But since moving to a lovely new yard with access to a stable, I’ve discovered that Princess Willow enjoys coming indoors at times. That meant investing in good‑quality bedding, and of course, I wanted something that aligned with my eco‑friendly ambitions.
My hunt for eco-friendly bedding led me to Wood & Slumber, created by family run business Arborforest Products Ltd, which is based in North Lincolnshire. Horse bedding is not their core product offering but a natural by-product of their timber import and processing business.
What makes Wood & Slumber eco-friendly?
Their sustainability credentials come from sourcing timber exclusively from fully sustainable temperate forests in Scandinavia, Northern Europe, and the Baltic States.
The company describes the bedding as “dust‑extracted, premium crafted equine bedding that is highly absorbent.”
I must agree. It’s extremely absorbent and very easy to muck out.

What are the other benefits of Wood & Slumber?
What stands out is how much the business cares about equine health. In a recent blog they highlighted the importance of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep for horses and the need for comfort and grip underfoot.
Well, the proof is in the pudding with Willow. Let’s just say the tell‑tale marks on her stable rug confirm she’s indeed getting that much needed REM sleep.
Is Wood & Slumber cost effective?
To find out where you can buy Wood & Slumber go to their website where they have a handy ‘Find a stockist’ tool where you can search for suppliers based on your location. My closest supplier is Speedgate in Fawkham and they currently sell the product for £10.50, which is a competitive price when you consider other brands like Plosplan and Hunter Woodshavings cost £13.75 and £14.25 respectively from this store.
Is it the best eco-friendly bedding?
I’m not ready to crown Wood & Slumber as the best sustainable bedding just yet. It’s the first eco‑friendly bedding product I’ve tried since launching Willow’s Earth and getting her back into stable life, and there are plenty more on my list. If you’re on your own journey to find the best sustainable bedding, follow along or share your experience of products you find effective and sustainable. I’ll be reviewing more eco‑friendly options soon.
